Although a Well-Woven urban creation, this interesting piece shows a columnar, one way tribal textile allover design of skinny elongated birds, barbered leaves, hatched ellipses and baskets, and stiff vinery segments, all on the warm ecru ground. The tonally matching border features reversing Turtle Palmette and Graceful green recovered leaves. Needs a bit of side work, but generally in good condition.

Antique Haji Jalili Tabriz Rug 8’10” x 11’5”.

This particularly narrow kenare (runner) displays a warm, abrashed madder red field, centred by a stretched pole medallion with five hooked diamonds and intermediary arrowhead forms. Secondary jewelry pendants. Main polychrome border with ecru, navy, teal, medium blue, red and camel-straw rhomboids. Minor borders with colorful shamrocks. Medium/moderate weave, good condition.

Kilim, a word of Turkish origin, denotes a pileless textile of many uses produced by one of several flat-weaving techniques that have a common or closely related heritage and are practiced in the geographical area that includes parts of Turkey (Anatolia and Thrace), North Africa, the Balkans, the Caucasus, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Central Asia and China.

Kilims are generally woven with the slitweave technique. The slit refers to the gap left between two blocks of color. It is created by returning the weft around the last warp in a color area, and the weft of the adjacent color is later returned around the adjacent warp.

The major difference between a kilim area rug and a carpet or a pile rug is that whereas the design visible on a pile rug is made by individual short strands of different color being knotted onto the warps and held together by pressing the wefts tightly, kilim designs are made by interweaving the variously colored wefts and warps, thus creating what is known as a flat-weave.

Weavers pack the weft tightly to completely cover the warp and often favor diagonal patterns so as to avoid weakening the structure of the rug with vertical slits. It produces bold, sharp patterns that weavers enjoy creating with more freedom allowed than a plainweave. This is also why kilims are so closely associated with geometrical designs even though there are kilims with floral designs as well.

This lovely antique Shirvan Caucasian Kilim carpet measures 4 x 10.8 ft and is from circa 1880s-1900s.

Vintage Tabriz Runner 2’5” x 10’1”.

In the iconic Isfahan style, with a very fine weave of asymmetric knots on a cotton foundation, this attractive, good condition urban scatter from Central Persia shows the characteristic old ivory field with a red flaming octofoil almost round medallion and en suite pendants, with thick strapwork forked and barbed leaves and an underlayer of nearly spiraling vines and palmettes. Medium blue corners with gold cartouches projecting into the field. Dense red border of striped palmettes and triple small rosettes. Very good condition.

From western Persia, , thuis creamy-straw carepet shows a strong curving arabesque vinery positioning oval palmettes, with a quadruple conjoint rosette and foursickle leaf centre, all accented in rust-red, green and chocolate. Green border with lappet and petal rosettes, and palmettes. Cotton foundation. Medium-coarse weave. Areas of light wear inducing corduroy ribbing. Generally good condition. Cream ground Sutanabads are the most desirable of the type and always decorative.
