Mid-Century German Haberdashery Shop Display Counter, 1950s

Vintage Design

Original German mid-century shop display cabinet or counter display cabinet in an attractive small size. Perfect for displaying goods or using as an espresso bar.

Standing on a rectangular, slightly recessed ebonised base, the display case made of oak is glazed on three sides and the top. At the back are 10 drawers with wooden handles. The fronts are mirrored on the inside and the bottoms are made of blackened hardboard.

A preserved manufacturer’s plaque on the inside of the display case documents the manufacturer “S.L.B. Südladenbau Stuttgart”, which existed between 1931 and 1980.

Joe Colombo (1930-1971) was a famed architect and furniture designer. The material, which use he loved was plastic. Joe Colombo designed dynamic furniture pieces, which promised to fit in every flat and for every required function.
The boby storage container is exhibited in the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

The vintage condition is fair with signs of age and use. Some stains at the top. We described the condition with images at the description.

This “Boby” trolley or portable storage system was designed by Joe Colombo in 1969. A very handy trolley made of ABS plastic. It has many storage options such as the fold-out shelves and several compartments that are removable for cleaning. This is an original and early version from the 1970’s, produced by Bieffeplast (Padova, Italy). All in a good condition with minor signs of age and use. Signed by the designer and stamped by the manufacturer.

Joe Colombo ‘Boby’ Trolley for B-Line. Designed in 1970, current production. Part of the permanent collection of MoMA in New York and the “Triennale” in Milan, Smau Prize in 1971.

Boby is much more than a simple container: it made design history.

Functionality and detail are its strong points which, together with an undeniably pop flavour, continue to make it the most popular storage trolley in creativity sectors as well as in the medical, and in the home. Designed with injection-moulded ABS plastic drawers and compartments that guarantee simple vertically modular solutions, Boby provides versatile customised storage capacity, while its polypropylene casters guarantee full mobility.

About Joe Colombo:
Cesare (known as Joe) Colombo was born in Milan in 1930. Essentially self-taught, he attended the Academy in Brera and then the faculty of Architecture at the Politecnico in Milan for a few years. Before becoming a designer he worked as a painter, builder, car salesman (his passion for cars remained with him) and entrepreneur in the electrics field. The technological utopia of Joe Colombo’s designs encompasses many of the hopes of the Sixties in Italy and Europe without becoming imprisoned by ideological restraints.

Here are a few of the most significant milestones in his extremely rapid escalation to designer of international renown, the symbol of an era.

In 1963 he opened his first studio in Milan.
In 1964 he won 3 medals at the “XIII Triennale” in Milan.
In 1967 he won the Gold Compass.
In 1968 he received his first International Design Award in Chicago.
In 1969 three of his objects were already part of the permanent collection at MoMA.

He died prematurely on 30th July 1971 on his 41st birthday.
