This beautiful painting by Abstract artist Roland Ginzel (1921-2021) is a great statement piece that would transform any wall and add modern elegance and style to any room. It is in wonderful original condition and in its original floating wood strap frame. The main background color is a metallic gold that shines from some angles more than others and the other bold colors he used make this a brilliant and unusual piece by Ginzel. I believe this was completed during the artist’s later years in the 1980s or 1990s, but it is not dated. It is signed ‘Ginzel’ on the verso.
In 1945, he returned to the AIC where he earned his B.F.A. with a focus on printmaking in 1948; he married fellow AIC artist Ellen Lanyon (1926 – 2013) that same year. Ginzel continued his printmaking studies under Mauricio Lasansky and received his M.F.A. from the University of Iowa in 1950. Ginzel studied printmaking during his post-graduate studies at the Slade School of Art in London under John Buckland Wright, and also at the Academia de Belle Arti in Rome.
Ginzel returned to Chicago in 1951 and continued his art while teaching printmaking part time at the University of Chicago and a few years later he co-founded the Graphic Art Workshop, that became a hub for printmakers from all over the country. He joined the staff of the University of Illinois Chicago in 1955 and taught there until 1985.
Later in his career, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from Lincoln College and taught part time at the Parsons School of Design and Columbia University while splitting his time between New York City and Massachusetts.
His work was included in important exhibitions of Chicago artists and featured in the First Chicago Invitational in 1962. In addition, his work has been exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, and at the Whitney Biennial in New York, as well as throughout Europe and Japan. The University of Illinois Chicago held a retrospective of his work in 1986.
His work is in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, Brooklyn Museum, Dallas Museum of Art, National Gallery of Art, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Illinois State Museum, Joslyn Museum of Art, and the University of Michigan Museum of Art.
This was purchased directly from the artist’s Massachusetts house cleanout prior to his death.

moreThe painting is in wonderful original condition with a basic frame that does have some imperfections. There does not appear to be any damage to the painting surface (no tears, paint loss, dents, etc…) though there may be some small surface scratches (please see photos). The frame is rather rudimentary, but since this was in the artist’s personal collection it is likely that he made the simple recessed strap frame. less
